White Knights & Reviling Wives

A serious study of the effect of Eden's fall had a significantly more acute impact on women than on men. This book provides evidence of that fact.

As a Pastor and Counselor, I consider this the most important book written in the past 25 years. Too many Pastors and elders don't see the rise of women who revile their husbands. This is deeply rooted in their DNA. This is another way we can love women better in our church: show them the truth of their role in marriage, and help men love their wives as Christ loved the church.

One of the best books I’ve read. I especially liked that there was an action plan for men dealing with a reviling wife.

David D. Edgington’s *White Knights and Reviling Wives: How Feminism Destroys Families* addresses a real and largely ignored injustice: a wife can be controlling, contemptuous, manipulative, violent, sexually withholding, or relentlessly accusatory, while church leaders automatically treat the husband as the offender. Edgington calls the men who reflexively rescue such women “white knights.” His strongest principle is thoroughly biblical: partiality does not become righteousness merely because it favors a woman. Every accusation must be established honestly, and each person must answer for his or her own conduct.

The book also correctly challenges the usual church counseling formula: whatever the wife does is interpreted as a reaction to the husband’s failure to “love her better.” Scripture never makes one person’s obedience dependent upon another person’s performance. A husband must love his wife, but he cannot repent for her bitterness, reviling, rebellion, adultery, or false accusations. Likewise, a wife’s wrongdoing never excuses cruelty or domination by her husband. Each soul answers to God.

Edgington is especially valuable when he exposes private, one-sided counseling. A church official hears the wife’s accusations alone, accepts her interpretation, and then summons the husband as though his guilt has already been established. That violates Proverbs 18:17: “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.” It also turns gossip into evidence and pastoral sympathy into judgment. His reported experience with hundreds of troubled marriages gives the book considerable practical weight, although claims such as his estimate that 90 percent of pastors and counselors blame the husband are impressions from his counseling experience, not demonstrated statistics. The book’s central weakness is that it recognizes the corruption produced by the pastor system but still expects that same system to provide the cure. Edgington wants better pastors, more courageous pastors, and pastors willing to discipline reviling wives. But the New Testament never establishes the modern professional Pastor as marital judge, household governor, or intermediary between husband and wife. Jesus forbade His disciples from adopting hierarchical titles and exercising authority after the manner of worldly rulers. Matthew 23: 8-12 Believers are brothers, and accusations are to be examined by the assembly with multiple witnesses, not decided privately in a pastor’s office. The “white knight” problem is therefore not merely a feminist corruption of pastoral authority. It is also the predictable result of giving one religious professional an authority Jesus never gave him.

The is a well written book and thoroughly researched. Even if it wasn’t, I am pleased someone has the courage to speak out and address this topic which has been long neglected by the church and society. Feminism will be the downfall of civilization.

I bought this book to see if I might be a reviling wife. I also understand it has a remedy and am hopeful to get to the end of the book soon. While I am not a violent wife, I do see how the use of my mouth has indeed caused great grief in our marriage. This book has pointed out to me many of my subtle manipulative manners and disrespect for my husband as the leader of our home. We have been married 45 years and not realizing it, I have been very affected by the feminist movement. I have committed myself to recognize the fact that God DOES lead me through my husband. I am learning to rest in that truth. Still hoping to finish my relationship with my husband strongly even though time is running out.

This is an excellent book! I have been recommending it like candy! While not married, I have been in "towards" marriage relationships that if only I had known, maybe if my pastor knew this kind of stuff happens... I would not have literal scars down my arms! You know something is wrong when they tell you, well Abraham Lincoln had an abusive wife and look how God used him.

Well written book about an important and much-overlooked issue that needs to be addressed. Content is solidly based in scripture. Couldn't put the book down - very engaging.

I have not read the book yet but it looks great and good quality. I also see the author’s memes on X and he’s funny and based so I know the book is a must read.

I read this book after hearing a podcast with the author. While I most certainly agree that reviling wives are a thing and for men who lives with them, life must be terrible, I thought the length of the book was excessive and that the last two chapters were the most helpful as far as practical help. I understand the author wanted to drive home his point, but I think some of the blanket statements can be dangerous when there are situations where a true male controller is reading it.

I honestly got this book to make sure I wasn’t a reviling wife. Haha. But I’m glad to see other people calling out feminism for what it is: Marxism and demonic activity in a pink package. Highly recommend for men and women.

This is an amazing book, outlining what I have gone through and am still going through with my reviling wife and unresponsive (dare I say, cowardly) church leadership. I wish it had come out 3 years earlier yet I am grateful that the recommendations the author made in how to deal with your wife and church I have largely followed. May this book continue to help rescue the church and our distraught men fight the war on feminism and open rebellion in the church.

It was very helpful in seeing women's sins more clearly in our feminist world today. I loved the content. The tone felt angry throughout the writing though maybe that's just me. Helped me have the words I need and knowledge to apply better leadership in my household. My wife and I were already Patriarchal though we didn't know there was a difference in that an complementarianism until this book. After failing in several relationships openly seeking marriage I've started to lose hope. This book helped me recognize the common entitlements, manipulations, immaturity, and selfishness in women I dated, in my mother and sisters, and movie characters. It's a dark world. Hoping to find a diamond in the rough, and that God will make me become the man to marry her.
